Ever After, Princess Diaries, A Cinderella Story…aside from being certified chic flicks, these films have something else in common. They all belong to the modern day fairytale genre of films. It begs the question now, what made them to be well-received if not a big hit despite the fact that they are the same old ugly duckling to princess metamorphosis?
I admit I love watching these types of films. But why? We want to let go of our physical deficiencies, we want to admired by everyone. We wish to have a royal inheritance or a glass slipper. We wish to find a Prince or that one day, we have a Queen Grandmother who will barge in school and declare we are a princess and; perhaps we long to have a Fairy Godmother who can turn our rag clothes into a beautiful gala gown. In short, somewhere along the way, we hope to be someone else.
However, is this really the reason why these type of films are still a hit besides the fact that they are the same old Cinderella concept?
I believe, these films reveal a very a deep yearning inside every girl. The yearning to be beautiful, the yearning to noticed and the yearning to be loved. We want the world to see what lies beneath us. Like Mia is beautiful behind her thick eyeglasses or Cinderella is stuning despite her rag clothes.
We all long that someone to notice a beauty hidden and ignored deep inside us. If we only believe that we are beautiful, we are. It will simply radiate from within us and glow our entire existence.
If we had made peace with ourselves, what anyone in this world will say can not and will not matter anymore.
If its us, who accept that we are beautiful in our own way, we definitely won’t need a Queen Grandmother demading from us a total makeover; and certainly, we won’t need the help of our FairyGodmother who can turn us into something or someone else by just waving her wand and say: ‘You can do magic, bibbity, bobbity, boo!’
